A quintessential piece of American identity is undergoing a rapid and much-needed transformation – the automobile industry is electrifying. Major vehicle manufacturers are committing to electrify their entire fleets in the coming years, and not a moment too soon. The transportation sector has surpassed the energy sector as the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions, making increased electric vehicle adoption imperative in the fight to cut global emissions.
We conducted this analysis to better understand the potential grid impacts and to develop grid optimization strategies for increased EV charging. Our analysis identifies potential pitfalls of a business-as-usual charging scenario and the grid system benefits of an optimized charging scenario. And we outline policy recommendations for creating the optimized scenario that pairs EVs with high-power at-home chargers as a powerful grid management resource for utilities rather than a more expensive and less predictable load to service.
